Emily Monaghan
Artist's Statement
For as long as I can remember, all I've ever wanted was to create meaningful work. I grew up surrounded by art– my mom's Fiona Apple CDs in the living room, The Wizard of Oz on the tv, and Broadway musicals a car ride away from my little town. The connection, resonance, and joy I found in this work was the most incredible feeling in the world, and I made it my mission to inspire others in the ways I had been inspired.

Through my many pursuits (singing, dancing, acting, and even a brief YouTube stint), I've settled on filmmaking as my current form of artistic expression. The power of visuals, sound, performance, and story come together magically, allowing us to experience a collective sense of empathy and unity with the characters. In my writing and directing, I hope to capture this feeling as best as I can, and I hope you enjoy following my journey to do so.

Bio

Emily Monaghan is a filmmaker in her final year at Boston University's College of Communication, earning her Bachelor of Science in Film and Television. Primarily on the Screenwriting and Production tracks, she intends to be a writer and director in the film or television industries. Her short script Vices, a meditation on generational trauma and substance abuse, represents the thesis of her work: to tell stories that highlight both the beauty and pain of human nature. Monaghan has written and directed several student films, including Changing Tune (2024) and La Fleur (2023), the latter of which was produced under the SAG-AFTRA Micro-Budget Project Agreement. Monaghan has also served on the Production Design team for two student films, Reflections of Us (2025, in post-production) and On the Line (2024, sole Production Designer). She has also worked on several student film sets as a Production Assistant.

Monaghan is also in television alongside film, acting as a key member of the student-produced mockumentary series NEW KID, working as a Production Designer and Writer's Apprentice for the first three episodes, and the Director and Producer of Episode 4: SPRINGBREAKDOWN. She has also written a spec script for The Bear season 3 and has a strong interest in working in a writer's room one day.

This spring, Monaghan will spend the semester in Los Angeles, working a professional internship within the industry alongside taking courses about the business of Hollywood. She intends to relocate to the Los Angeles area after graduation and is open to work within the spheres of film, television, or music.
